What is Industrial-Organizational Psychology?

The industrial part of industrial-organizational psychology is figuring out the best way to connect people with the right jobs. This aspect of I-O psychology is also known as personnel psychology.

1. I/O psychologists use their scientific research in various work settings, including industries like manufacturing, businesses, labor unions, and healthcare facilities. Their research covers a wide range of topics, from testing and evaluating job applicants and employees to developing leaders, managing staff, building teams, handling pay, ensuring workplace safety, promoting diversity, and supporting work-life balance.

2. Some I/O psychologists also work in research or teach at colleges and universities. They're trained to be instructors, discussion leaders, evaluators, mentors, and advisors. I/O psychologists might also work within a company's human resources department, or they could serve as independent advisors brought in to solve specific issues for an organization.

In 2012, the biggest area where I/O psychologists worked — and where they got paid the most — was in management, scientific, and technical consulting services. After that, it was the state government. They also worked in scientific and development services, at healthcare offices, and in schools and colleges.

To become an I/O psychologist, you usually start with a bachelor's degree in psychology. While some people find work with just a bachelor's degree, it's not very common. Most people who want to be I/O psychologists go on to get more education, though they might take a break to work and get some real-life experience.

If you have a master's degree in I/O psychology, you can often find an entry-level job to kickstart your career. But if you have a doctoral degree, you'll have even more job options in this field.

How much can you earn as an IO psychologist?

The salary of an I/O psychologist depends on how much experience they have and who they work for.

According to the statistics of 2012, the starting salary for someone with a master's degree in I/O psychology was about 10,00,000 PA, while those with a doctoral degree started at around 15,00,000. University professors made about 12,00,000 PA, and people working in companies earned around 6,00,000.

On average, I/O psychologists made about 6,00,000 PA. The highest-paid ones could make 20,00,000 or even more annually.
